Facial recognition systems work using computer algorithms and help in easy and quick identification of criminals.
Fremont, CA: Face recognition uses an individual's face for identifying and authenticating their identity. Face recognition systems are used for authenticating people in pictures, videos, and in real-time. In the near future, face recognition technology will serve various purposes like tracking individual movements, tracking vehicles, and automated license plate readers.

How does face recognition work?
Facial recognition systems can work using computer algorithms. These algorithms are created by using data about a particular face. The data collected from an individual’s face is known as a face template. It is different from a photograph as is only includes details such as the shape of chin, the distance between the eyes, and nose to lip ratios. These details are collected in a database and converted into mathematical representation to procure computer algorithms. Sometimes it is difficult for facial recognition systems to identify faces in conditions like low lighting, poor image resolution, and incorrect camera angles. Two challenges faced by facial recognition systems are:
False-negative-When a facial recognition system cannot recognize and match an individual’s face with the available database, it is known as a false negative.
False-positive-A face recognition system matches an individual’s face to an image in a database, but sometimes the match may be incorrect. It is known as a false positive.
How is face recognition used in law enforcement?
Law enforcement agencies are using facial recognition systems now more than ever. Police collect images of all the defaulters and compare them with the available database. Once an image is collected, it is available in the database forever. Police and other law enforcement forces scan and run through this data every time they need to identify a criminal. Law enforcement uses face recognition for the following purposes:
Real-time data
Law enforcement officials and police can use the available databases to identify people in images taken from social media, CCTV cameras, or traffic cameras. Faces can also be matched with hot-listed people suspected of unlawful activities in real-time.
Easy identification
Officials can use smartphones, tablets, or any portable device to take a picture of a driver or person in the field and compare it with face recognition databases to identify them quickly and easily.
Privacy and protection
Face recognition is used for security checking at airports, border crossings, and many large events. Face recognition is now also employed in private settings such as supermarkets and sporting venues. However, private sector face recognition follows a separate set of laws.
