Solid waste management is a major concern for governments worldwide, and IoT is helping to solve the problem by enabling smart waste management.
Fremont, CA: As cities worldwide experience unprecedented population growth, sustainable solid waste management has become a major challenge for local governments. According to a recent World Bank research, around 2.01 billion tons of solid waste are produced each year, with 33 percent of it being disposed of in an environmentally detrimental manner. According to the same World Bank estimate, the figures are predicted to climb by another billion tons of created waste during the next four decades. Municipalities and private waste management businesses have attempted to address this problem by strengthening internal operational processes in order to boost Return on Investments. This technique, however, has failed because dumping vehicles must physically pass by each trash bin to check the trash level. When trucks pass by to check dumpsters that don't need to be emptied, this manual procedure wastes time and money.

IoT waste collection for sustainable waste management
Climate change has generated requests for nations to minimize their carbon footprint in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. A rallying cry for better climate change management has been launched. As a result, both governments and the private sector have been obliged to turn to smart waste management technologies in order to increase recycling and waste collection. An IoT platform, a gateway, sensors, mobile, and web applications are all included in a smart waste management system kit.
What Makes IoT-Enabled Waste Management Solutions So Effective?
Sensors in modern dumpsters monitor their fill level, and application gateways connect the IoT platforms. They also have sensors that transmit data from the dumpsters to cloud servers. IoT solutions transform raw data into useful information. Sensors that measure physical changes, temperature, and position can be GPS, motion, light, or vibration sensors. These networked dumpsters transmit real-time data to garbage collectors, who get it via mobile or web applications. Waste management businesses can also use this data to optimize truck routes in places where immediate attention is required.
